Magnolia x Soulangeana Tree
'Magnolia Soulangeana' is a very popular flowering tree or large shrub that was created by cross-breeding 'Magnolia liliflora'. It usually grows as a multi-stemmed shrubby plant with a rounded crown that grows to 20-25' tall, but it can also be trained into a small tree's shape. The broad flowers, which can be up to 10 inches long and are goblet-shaped, can be white, red, pink, purple, or red-purple. They gracefully open their huge petals to expose white interiors as they age. This produces a bicolor effect, which contributes to the overall elegance of the floral arrangement. In the fall, the foliage turns a golden-brown color before falling to the ground, revealing the smooth silvery bark underneath.
