The 'Gold Medal' rose (Rosa 'Gold Medal'), also known by its cultivar name 'AROyqueli', is a distinguished Grandiflora variety celebrated for its vibrant blooms and robust growth. Developed by American hybridizer Jack E. Christensen and introduced in 1982, this rose has become a favorite among gardeners and rose enthusiasts.

Origin and Breeding

Jack E. Christensen, an acclaimed American rose breeder, created 'Gold Medal' by crossing the hybrid teas 'Yellow Pages' and a combination of 'Granada' and 'Garden Party'. Christensen's work has led to over 80 new rose cultivars, with 'Gold Medal' being one of his notable achievements.

Plant Description

'Gold Medal' is a tall, bushy, and upright Grandiflora rose, typically reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet (120 to 180 cm) with a spread of 3 to 4 feet (90 to 120 cm). The plant boasts large, semi-glossy, dark green foliage that provides a striking backdrop to its vibrant blooms. Notably, the stems are nearly thornless, making it a gardener-friendly choice.

Flower Characteristics

The blooms of 'Gold Medal' are high-centered and ruffled, measuring approximately 4 to 4.5 inches (10 to 11 cm) in diameter. Initially, the flowers display a deep golden-yellow hue with copper-orange undertones, gradually fading to a pale yellow as they mature. Each bloom comprises 30 to 40 petals and exudes a mild, fruity fragrance with hints of spice and tea. The flowers are borne singly on long, straight stems or in small clusters, making them excellent for cutting and floral arrangements.

Blooming and Fragrance

This rose variety is known for its prolific blooming, producing flowers in flushes from spring through fall. The mild, fruity fragrance adds an aromatic delight to gardens, enhancing its appeal among rose enthusiasts.

Growth and Maintenance

'Gold Medal' is a vigorous grower that thrives in various climates, particularly excelling in hot conditions. It exhibits good disease resistance, especially against common rose ailments, making it a relatively low-maintenance choice for gardeners. Regular pruning and deadheading encourage continuous blooming and maintain the plant's shape.

Uses in Landscaping

Due to its striking appearance and robust nature, 'Gold Medal' is versatile in landscape design. It serves well as a focal point in garden beds, mixed borders, or as a hedge. Its long-stemmed blooms are also ideal for cut flower arrangements, bringing indoor beauty that mirrors its garden presence.
