The 'Tournament of Roses' rose, also known by its cultivar name 'JACient', is a distinguished grandiflora variety introduced by breeder William A. Warriner in 1988. This rose was named in honor of the annual Tournament of Roses Parade held in Pasadena, California, and it earned the prestigious All-America Rose Selections award in 1989.

Physical Characteristics

This rose variety is renowned for its medium to large, full blooms, each comprising 25 to 30 petals with an average diameter of approximately 3.5 inches (8.89 cm). The flowers exhibit a captivating color gradient, featuring light coral-pink petals with a darker reverse, creating a striking visual contrast. The blooms are typically borne on long stems, either singly or in small clusters, and exude a mild, sweet fragrance.

Growth Habit and Foliage

The 'Tournament of Roses' rose grows as an upright, vigorous shrub, reaching heights of 3 to 5 feet (90–150 cm) with a spread of 2 to 3 feet (60–90 cm). It boasts glossy, dark green foliage that not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also offers good resistance to common rose diseases such as blackspot, mildew, and rust.

Blooming and Hardiness

One of the standout features of this cultivar is its continuous blooming cycle, producing an abundance of flowers from spring through fall. In warmer climates, it may even continue to bloom into winter. The 'Tournament of Roses' rose thrives best in USDA hardiness zones 7a and warmer, making it suitable for a variety of temperate regions.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of its exceptional qualities, the 'Tournament of Roses' rose was awarded the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) honor in 1989, reflecting its outstanding performance in various climates and conditions across the United States.

Cultivation and Care

Gardeners appreciate this rose for its ease of cultivation and impressive floral display. It prefers full sun exposure and well-drained soil. Regular watering and fertilization will promote vigorous growth and prolific blooming. Pruning should be done in early spring to remove dead or weak canes and to shape the plant, encouraging healthy new growth.
