SERISSA JAPONICA
🌿 Serissa japonica Plant
Serissa japonica, commonly known as Snow Rose, Snowrose, or Serissa, is a small evergreen shrub famous for its tiny white flowers, dense foliage, and naturally compact growth. It is also a popular plant for bonsai.
🌱 Basic information
- Scientific name: Serissa japonica
- Common names: Snow Rose, Snowrose, Japanese Serissa, Tree of a Thousand Stars
- Family: Rubiaceae
- Growth: Small, bushy shrub
- Flowers: Small white flowers, sometimes with a light fragrance
- Leaves: Small, dark green and glossy
- Uses: Bonsai, ornamental pots, balconies, patios, and garden borders
☀️ Light
Serissa needs bright light to grow and flower well.
- Morning sunlight is excellent.
- It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in cooler parts of the day.
- Protect it from very harsh afternoon summer sun.
- Indoors, place it near a bright window.
💧 Watering
Serissa likes evenly moist soil, but it does not like standing water.
Water when the upper surface of the soil begins to dry. During hot weather, it may need more frequent watering.
Avoid both extremes: don't let the root ball become completely dry, and don't keep it permanently waterlogged.
🪴 Soil
Use a fertile but very well-draining soil. For bonsai, a free-draining bonsai substrate is particularly important.
A mixture containing:
- Coco peat/peat
- Compost or organic matter
- Perlite or coarse sand
can work well for a normal container plant.
🌡️ Temperature
Serissa prefers warm, stable conditions.
A temperature around 18–30°C is generally comfortable. Protect it from cold weather, sudden temperature changes, and cold drafts.
🌸 Flowering
With sufficient light, warmth, water, and nutrition, Serissa can produce many small white flowers.
Regular light pruning after flowering helps maintain its compact shape and encourages branching.
✂️ Pruning
Serissa responds well to pruning.
- Remove dead or yellow leaves.
- Trim excessively long shoots to maintain a bushy shape.
- For bonsai, regular trimming is used to develop the desired structure.
🌿 Fertilizer
During active growth, use a balanced liquid fertilizer at an appropriate dilution every few weeks. Reduce feeding when the plant is not actively growing.
⚠️ Common problems
| Problem | Possible cause |
|---|---|
| Yellow leaves | Overwatering, poor drainage, or stress |
| Leaves falling | Sudden environmental change, watering problems, or cold |
| Few/no flowers | Insufficient light or nutrients |
| Brown/crispy leaves | Dry soil, excessive heat, or low humidity |
| Weak growth | Insufficient light or nutrition |
🌳 Serissa as a bonsai
Serissa japonica is particularly attractive as a bonsai because of its small leaves, fine branches, compact growth, and flowers. It can be shaped into several bonsai styles and can develop a very attractive miniature tree with proper pruning.
For a Serissa in India's warm climate: give it bright morning sun or filtered light, excellent drainage, regular watering, and protection from extreme afternoon heat.
