Philodendron Xanadu is a beautiful tropical foliage plant known for its deeply divided, glossy green leaves and compact, bushy growth. It is especially popular for gardens, balconies, patios, and bright indoor spaces.
🌱 Key facts
Scientific name:Thaumatophyllum xanadu (commonly still called Philodendron Xanadu)
Family: Araceae
Origin: Brazil
Growth habit: Upright, clumping plant
Typical height: Around 2–4 ft (60–120 cm), depending on conditions
Leaves: Large, deeply lobed and shiny green
Growth rate: Moderate to fast in warm, favorable conditions
☀️ Light
Xanadu does best in bright, indirect or filtered sunlight.
A little morning sun is usually fine.
Protect it from strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Too little light can result in slower growth and smaller leaves.
💧 Watering
Water when the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of soil feels dry.
Avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy because excess water can cause root rot. Make sure the pot has drainage holes.
🪴 Soil
Use a loose, well-draining, organic-rich potting mix. A combination such as:
Coco peat or peat
Compost
Perlite
A little orchid bark
works well.
🌡️ Temperature & humidity
Xanadu prefers warm conditions, roughly 18–30°C.
It enjoys moderate-to-high humidity but can adapt to normal household humidity. Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below about 12–15°C.
🌿 Fertilizing
During active growth, feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer approximately once every 4–6 weeks, following the fertilizer's recommended dilution.
✂️ Pruning & propagation
Remove yellow, damaged, or old leaves with clean scissors.
Xanadu is generally propagated by division of the plant/clump, especially when it has developed multiple stems or offsets.
⚠️ Toxicity
Like other plants in the arum family, Xanadu contains calcium oxalate crystals and can cause irritation if chewed or eaten. Keep it away from pets and young children.
Tip: In India's warm climate, Xanadu can grow very well outdoors in bright filtered light, provided it is protected from harsh midday/afternoon sun and heavy waterlogging.
