OVATION CYMBIDIUM
“Ovation” is a named hybrid cultivar in the Cymbidium Ovation group of cymbidium orchids. It is valued for its showy flower spikes, strong blooming habit, and use in hybrid breeding. One registered hybrid, Cymbidium Green Stone, was created using Cymbidium Ovation as a parent.
Characteristics of Ovation Cymbidium
Although individual plants can vary depending on the clone and grower, Ovation-type cymbidiums generally have:
- Large, elegant blooms
- Long arching flower spikes
- Good flower count per spike
- Strong fragrance in some selections
- Long-lasting flowers suitable for cut arrangements
- Evergreen strap-like foliage
Most Ovation hybrids are grown as ornamental orchids for winter and spring flowering. Like other cymbidiums, they prefer bright light and cooler nights to initiate blooms.
Growing Conditions
Light
- Bright filtered sunlight
- Morning sun preferred
Temperature
- Cool nights (10–15°C) help flowering
- Warm days are tolerated if humidity is adequate
Water
- Keep evenly moist during active growth
- Reduce slightly after flowering
Potting
- Bark-based orchid mix with excellent drainage
Feeding
- Balanced orchid fertilizer during growth season
In Bihar Climate
For warm regions like Bihar:
- Keep the plant under 50–60% shade net
- Ensure airflow during humid weather
- Protect from extreme May–June heat
- Winter outdoor conditions may encourage spike formation
Important Note
Many cymbidium hybrids, including Ovation types, are difficult to identify exactly without the original nursery label because thousands of hybrids exist and many look similar. Orchid growers often rely on tagged plants for accurate identification.
